Danny O'Brien won the Blue Diamond Stakes with highly-rated colt Star Witness and on Saturday he'll try to win the Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield with Divine Luck.

A beautifully-bred colt, Divine Luck, a $160,000 Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale purchase at the Gold Coast, is by Redoute's Choice's son Bradbury's Luck, the Canonbury Stakes and Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic winner in 2004-05.

The grey is a half-brother to Group One performer Mimi Lebrock, winner of the Group Two Tristarc Stakes and Group Three Let's Elope Stakes.

At his only start Divine Luck ran third to Zachary over 1100m at Caulfield on January 9.

"He's a very nice horse. The reason we tipped him out after his first run was because he was still pretty raw," O'Brien said.

"He's improved but he'll be better as a three-year-old.

"He's a half-brother to Mimi Lebrock and I reckon when he gets to 1400 metres or a mile (1600m) he'll be really at his best.

"We'll give him a couple of runs this preparation and we'll see where we're at."

James Winks has been engaged to ride Divine Luck in Saturday's 1200m Listed Race.

O'Brien is not a renowned trainer of juveniles, preferring to keep most of his horses until their three-year-old season and beyond.

But the Flemington trainer, who also has a training establishment at Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula near Geelong, has excelled with two of his two-year-year-olds this season.

He won three races with Starcraft colt Star Witness including the Group One Blue Diamond (1200m) and the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m), while O'Reilly filly Shamrocker won twice including the Group Two VRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m).

"We have 60 two-olds but probably less than 25 per cent of them have started," O'Brien said.

"We have nice ones at home that haven't raced yet. A lot of the unraced ones won't be running until the next spring as three-year-olds."

Three of the 11-horse field are dual acceptors with last Saturday's Sandown winner Jesse's Girl, the stakes-placed Flokkati and Sistine Angel also engaged in Sunday's Dequetteville Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

Leading trainer Peter Moody has engaged stable jockey Luke Nolen for Flokkati in the Dequetteville, indicating she'll run there, while stablemate Elucidate who makes her debut in the Blue Sapphire will be ridden by Nolen.

Lee Freedman has three runners in the Blue Sapphire including Kookaburras, an unraced Redoute's Choice colt who is a half-brother to former star filly Alinghi.

The Freedman stable will also saddle up first starter Smokin' Joey, a brother to Our Smoking Joe and half-brother to SAJC Fillies Classic and VRC St Leger runner-up Gallant Lady, and Lonhro colt Territory.

Territory struck interference near the 400m on debut when third to Eclair Mystic over 1200m at Caulfield on April 3.
