Front running stayer Light Vision is among 18 horses looking to win a guaranteed start in next month's Caulfield Cup through Saturday's Naturalism Stakes.

Trainer Robert Smerdon said Light Vision was racing in the best form of his career but had only 50kg in the Cup and was yet to pass the first elimination clause.

The winner of the Naturalism (2000) is exempt from the Caulfield Cup ballot and being so far down in the weights, winning Saturday's Caulfield lead up looks Light Vision's best chance of forcing his way into the field.

"He has come back a different level this preparation, and he's in both the Cups," Smerdon said.

"But the owner is just as happy to take a softer path if it doesn't work out and run him where he is most competitive."

Light Vision followed his 4-1/4 length win over Perth Cup winner Cats Fun over 1600 metres at Caulfield on August 16 with a length victory over Gallopin in the Voodoo Hcp (2000m) at Flemington two weeks ago.

Smerdon said a final decision about Light Vision's spring direction would be made after he runs in the Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington on October 4.

The Naturalism has a capacity field of 16 and four emergencies and only Testa Grande and third emergency Pacino are missing from the Caulfield Cup entries.

Gallopin is again a rival for Light Vision on Saturday and trainer Danny O'Brien was encouraged by his improved second up run last start.

He is equal 48th in the Caulfield Cup order of entry along with other Naturalism runners Queen of Queens and Zavite.

The 2007 WA Derby winner Guyno, 2008 SA Derby winner Zagreb, and 2008 VRC St Leger dead-heater Moment in Time are equal 34th.

Dolphin Jo is equal 43rd in the Cup order.

A Caulfield Cup start is also on the line for Baughurst and Rumbird (equal 57th), Glistening and New Kid In Town (equal 66th) and unqualified entries Leica Falcon, Poised To Win, Britomart, Cholula, Naturalism emergencies Scenic Bullet, and The Wolverine.

Past Naturalism winners have included last year's Caulfield Cup runner-up Douro Valley (2007), 2006 Moonee Valley Cup winner Zipping (2006), Pentastic (2002), 1999 Caulfield Cup third placegetter Inaflury (2001), 2001 Caulfield Cup third placegetter Celestial Show (2000), and 2000 Melbourne Cup third placegetter Second Coming (1999).
