Light Vision will have a second tilt at the Group Three Easter Cup (2000m) as part of his progression this autumn.

Trainer Robert Smerdon said Monday's CFMEU-FFTS Handicap (1600) at Moonee Valley was a stepping stone to the gelding trying to avenge his defeat in last year's holiday feature at Caulfield.

"It is an awkward time of the year for him but that is his short to medium term goal," Smerdon said.

Nicholas Hall is booked to ride the six-year-old who unsuccessfully contested the Caulfield Cup last spring, finishing near the tail of the field.

He has 61kg at the Valley but big weights are something Smerdon has grown accustomed to with Light Vision.

"In races that appear suitable he gets plenty of weight and when he gets in with a reasonable weight it is in races which are beyond his capability," Smerdon said.

"We just have to find the right balance if we can with him."

Light Vision finished third to Miss Maren and Raffaello in the 2009 Easter Cup and last spring went on to win the Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington for the second year in a row.

He has always been just below the topline stayers but has been placed in a number of feature races, including Group Three seconds in the 2008 Lexus Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes as well as last year's Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield.

"Despite the big weight we are looking for him to be competitive again second-up on Monday," Smerdon said.

Light Vision resumed over 1400 metres at Caulfield on February 27 and ran an even race carrying 61kg to finish sixth to Berringama.

Smerdon will also saddle up top jumper Some Are Bent against Light Vision for his second run this campaign.

He was beaten 21 lengths when he resumed and finished last over 1600 metres at Moonee Valley and Smerdon said he was not expected to trouble the judge.

"Flat races are a means to an end," Smerdon said.

"The horse himself is good but he blew out last start and we are just trying to get some miles into his legs before the jumps races come around."

Smerdon said Some Are Bent would target the steeplechase races this season with the Brierly Steeplechase at Warrnambool his first planned contest over the jumps on May 4.
