Peter Moody says it is worth having a shot at the stumps with honest mare Mid Summer Music in Saturday's Group Three Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield.

The Oamaru Force mare has been very honest throughout her career and has come a long way since winning a Warracknabeal Maiden (1200m) at her racing debut in February last year.

Linda Meech, who rode Mid Summer Music in that race, had to convince Moody to keep her in the stable after that initial win with pleasing results for her owners.

The rising six-year-old, tackling her first weight-for-age event, has won seven of her 12 starts, five of them in town, and been placed in three other races for $232,650 in prizemoney.

"She's just kept on progressing," Moody said.

"She's adept on soft ground. Weight-for-age isn't going to suit her, but if you take a line through Rue Maple's last run it's probably worth a shot at the stumps to get some black type.

"I'd much rather it be a handicap, she'd be getting a lot of weight off them."

Mid Summer Music has won two of her three starts this preparation, finishing ahead of Bletchingly rival Rue Maple when scoring first-up over 1100m at Caulfield in May and Moonee Valley in June.

She was narrowly beaten when runner-up to Perturbo in the All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m) at Flemington on July 9.

Rue Maple franked the form with her second to Secret Flyer in the weight-for-age Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on July 16.

"She's a good honest mare but you have to remember she's been racing over the winter and you have to wonder how far into the spring she can go," Moody said of Mid Summer Music.

Mid Summer Music has drawn barrier eight in a field of 10 and will be ridden by the stable's number one rider Luke Nolen who has his second successive Melbourne jockeys' premiership in the bag going into the last metropolitan meeting of the season.

Moody said the wide gate was inconsequential as the mare was so adaptable.

"She can lead or she can sit back," he said.

Moody, who has trained 101-1/2 winners so far this season and has won his second successive Melbourne trainers' premiership, has eight runners at the meeting including four last-start winners.

Mid Summer Music is $3.40 favourite for the 1200m feature with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Second Effort at $5, Rue Maple and Secret Flyer at $6 with Gold Trail at $8.50 and Uxorious next best at $11.
