Lady Lynette landed her first win for top trainer Robert Smerdon at Caulfield since being sent over from Tasmania, and earned a shot at the Group Three Tesio Stakes on Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley.

The Ladoni five-year-old had won seven races for trainer David Brunton, who prepares his team at Seven Mile Beach near Hobart, including the Vamos Stakes (1400m) at Launceston in February and a 1400m race at Sandown in March.

After the Sandown success, Brunton decided to leave Lady Lynette with Caulfield-based Smerdon to avoid travelling her back and forth from Tasmania.

Brunton's wife Julie is the managing part-owner of the mare.

"I've known Dave for a long, long time and the travelling back and forward didn't suit him so he wanted her to have a permanent base," Smerdon said.

"He has done all the groundwork with her."

After a third over 1400m at Caulfield and a second over 1514m at Moonee Valley she had a spell at Brunton's property before being readied by him for a spring campaign with Smerdon.

Having her fifth start for Smerdon and her third outing this preparation on Wednesday, the mare was sent out $6 equal favourite in the carsales.com.au Classic (1600m) and gave Nick Hall a double when scoring by 1-3/4 lengths from dual Group One winner Purple ($6 eq fav) with Dollops ($11) a half-neck away third.

"She was unknown at the 1600 metres today but I said to Nick it was just a matter of being in the right spot and rating her," Smerdon said.

"He nursed her around the corner and she gave a good kick. She's pretty foolproof the way she races."

Earlier Hall scored on the Darren Weir-trained Dark Valley in the Listed Inglis Debutants Stakes (1000m).

The Tesio Stakes is also run over 1600m on October 24.
