Mr Gilly gets the chance to convince trainer Kim Waugh to take him to Brisbane when he runs in the Listed McKell Cup at Rosehill on Saturday.

Five-year-old Mr Gilly comes into the 2400-metre feature after beating just one runner home at Canterbury in a 1900-metre race won by Deltona on May 16.

His lacklustre performance prompted a veterinary examination but Waugh said the Keeper gelding had done well since the run.

"He's done well and may go to the Queensland Cup if he runs well Saturday," Waugh said.

"He such a big horse and he wasn't suited by the tight track last time out and getting back to a bigger track and over more ground will suit."

The shortest trip Mr Gilly has won over was 1850 metres when he broke his maiden status early last year at Newcastle.

He has been unplaced in all three runs this preparation and has not won since Boxing Day at Randwick when he defeated Chelmsford by 1-1/2 lengths over 2600 metres.

Mr Gilly has only beaten four runners home this time in but has scored twice over Saturday's distance.

If he does run well then he would join stablemate's Tangalooma and Risayla who are also being aimed at the Queensland Cup.

Tangalooma rattled home to finish an unlucky third to Phaze Action in the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington on May 16.

The NSW Central Coast-based trainer is hoping to run Tangalooma in Saturday week's Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm before taking on the Queensland Cup (3200m) at the same venue on July 4.

Waugh, who trained Mahtoum to win the 2005 Sydney Cup (3200m), is hoping to launch a two-pronged assault in the Brisbane Cup with Risayla still in the mix.

Risayla finished 4-1/4 lengths seventh to Reggie in the Group Three Premier's Cup (2200m) run on a heavy Doomben track last Saturday.

Mr Gilly is a bolter on TAB Sportsbet for the McKell at $35 in a market which has the Guy Walter-trained Lyncean Academy as the $4.60 favourite ahead of Music Review and Prince Arthur at $5.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Ready To Lift is rated a $5.50 chance.

Ready To Lift's chances of running in the Brisbane Cup hinge on her performance in the McKell.
