The winning ways of Peter Moody extended to Sydney when Fairygem took out the Listed Australia Day Cup at Randwick.

The Caulfield trainer is leading the Melbourne premiership and Fairygem's win came less than an hour after Set For Fame took out the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes on her home track.

Starting at $6, Fairygem reeled in $3.60 equal favourite over the final stages of the 2400m staying test to surge away to a 2-1/2 length win.

Come On Cugat ($8.50) was another two lengths third with equal favourite Zavite a close fourth after tracking race leader Rabbuka most of the way.

Rabbuka weakened to finish seventh seemingly confirming doubts about his ability over the distance.

Moody's travelling foreman Daniel Hickey was thrilled and said he couldn't wish for a better job.

"It's great, the stable is going so well," Hickey said.

"I've just come back from Perth and now the next stop will probably be Tasmania with this mare.

"Peter has the Launceston Cup in mind."

Fairygem finished a close fifth in the Tatt's Cup (2000m) won by Rainbow Styling on New Year's Day and Hickey said the extra 400 metres was in her favour.

"She is one of the good stayers in the camp," he said.

"Her first time here she was a bit stirred up and didn't handle the right handed track too well.

"But she has settled down well now and the distance suited."

Her jockey Corey Brown thought the mare might struggle to get past Rainbow Styling but once they reached him, he knew he had his measure.

"She was under hard riding to catch Jimmy Cassidy on Rainbow Styling," Brown said.

"But once I got to him, I knew I had him."

Trainer Anthony Cummings said Zavite was also still on target for a trip to Tasmania for next month's Launceston Cup and the Group One Auckland Cup.

"I'm pleased with the horse's effort," he said.

"Hobart is still on the agenda and the Auckland Cup is still an aim."

Michael Hawkes, co-trainer of Rainbow Styling said he was not sure if the consistent gelding had come to the end of his preparation.

"We were beaten by a better horse on the day," he said.

"He's done a good job this preparation and I'm not sure whether this is the end of it yet."
