Monaco Consul has beaten Faint Perfume in an exhibition gallop between races at Caulfield on Sunday, seven days before their clash in the Group One Turnbull Stakes.

With race jockey Craig Williams aboard, Monaco Consul sat two lengths off the Bart Cummings-trained Faint Perfume, ridden by Luke Nolen, in the 1600m workout before joining her around the home turn.

The Mike Moroney-trained Monaco Consul forged clear in the straight to win the gallop by three-quarters of a length.

The pair were timed to run the final 200m on the workout in a sizzling 22.5s, the last 400m in 34.8 and the last 800m in 49s.

"Both horses had a nice hit-out and ran a bit of time. We thought we'd bring him here today and he'll have a hit-out on the course proper at Flemington as well," Moroney said.

"We'll go to the Turnbull and make up our minds after that whether to go to the Cox Plate or the Caulfield Cup.

"That will tell the picture before we head to the Melbourne Cup.

"He doesn't need a lot of racing and his two runs have been really good so far this preparation."

Cummings' Melbourne stable foreman Reg Fleming was happy with VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume and she will be ridden by Glen Boss in the Turnbull (2000m).

Nolen is committed to riding Typhoon Tracy in the Turnbull while Michael Rodd, who has ridden Faint Perfume to two Group One and two Group Two wins, will stick with Melbourne Cup winner Shocking.

Rodd rode Faint Perfume last start when she settled a long way back and made up ground to finish ninth behind Avienus in the W H Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley when second up on September 11.

However the Shamardal four-year-old is expected to go a lot better over the 2000 metres of the Turnbull on a track where she is unbeaten in three outings having won the Wakeful Stakes, VRC Oaks and Kewney Stakes.

Monaco Consul, a dual Group One winner of the Spring Champion Stakes and the Victoria Derby, is also expected to be a big improver after his second up seventh to Shocking in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

Meanwhile the Cummings-trained Brightnight was found to have suffered from atrial fibrillation - an irregular heartbeat - following his poor performance to finish eighth of nine as $1.95 favourite in the Fox FM Boulevard Hcp (1800m) at Caulfield.

Jockey James Winks said the four-year-old travelled beautifully to the 600m but as soon as he pulled him out to make his run he was gone.

Fleming said the stable would press on with Brightnight with the Group Two Herbert Power Hcp (2400m) at Caulfield on Saturday week his next target if he can sneak into the field.
