In New Zealand on Saturday, Monaco Consul will embark on a mission that could earn him worldwide acclaim.

Last spring's Victoria Derby winner has his first run for the new year in the group 1 Darci Brahma International over 2000 metres at Te Rapa on his way to the $2 million New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie, in which victory would put in him in line for a shot at history. For no horse has taken out the treble of the Victoria Derby, New Zealand Derby and AJC Derby.

''That's what we are trying to achieve with him and this race tomorrow is an important step for him,'' trainer Mike Moroney said from New Zealand yesterday. ''He's coming off a bit of a break and the 2000 metres may be a little short for him but this race will have him 100 per cent for the derby in three weeks.'' Monaco Consul was beaten more than a dozen lengths at his most recent run but jarred up.
