Paul Messara is expanding his training operations with plans to open a satellite stable under the care of trainer Eden Petrie at Caloundra.

Petrie's star Group One-winning sprinter Albert The Fat will be transferred to Messara ahead of his upcoming spring campaign in Melbourne.

Messara, who arrived home on Tuesday after saddling Alverta to finish third in the Group One July Cup at Newmarket in England last week, plans to have a team of 14 horses in work at Caloundra on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

"There's some good opportunities in Queensland," Messara said.

"I've travelled a lot of horses to Queensland but it's a big job and very cumbersome."

Messara, the son of Arrowfield Stud boss John Messara, claimed his first Group One with Alverta in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill in March while Petrie also landed his first Group One winner with Albert The Fat in the BTC Cup at Doomben in May.

Alverta was also Messara's first winner as a trainer and his first stakeswinner.

Messara currently has two training bases, at a state-of-the-art complex at Arrowfield Stud at Scone in the NSW Hunter Valley and at Randwick in Sydney.

He has a degree in business communications but turned to training after working for Starcraft's trainer Gary Newham and taking advice from his mentor, former Group One-winning trainer Dr Geoff Chapman who lives on the Gold Coast.

Petrie, who is based at Canungra in the Gold Coast hinterland, is looking forward to working for Messara.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge," Petrie said.

"I see it as a great opportunity to join Paul and Arrowfield.

"The overheads in this game kill you and there's a lot more security involved by moving to Paul."

Petrie worked for 20 years as John Wallace's foreman on the Gold Coast before training for 18 months from 2004.

After doing it tough, Petrie handed in his trainer's licence to work as a foreman for Dale Sutton at Wadham Park in the Gold Coast hinterland.

He stayed on at Wadham Park and took out a trainer's licence again in 2008 when Sutton moved to Victoria.

Petrie said Albert The Fat had blossomed since his short break following his close fifth to Black Piranha in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm last month.

"It was an enormous run in the Stradbroke and he came through the race well," Petrie said.

"He went to the paddock on cloud nine rather than at the bottom of the barrel and he's in pre-training now getting ready for the spring.

"Nothing is set in concrete in Melbourne but the (Group One) Emirates Classic at Flemington looks a logical race for him."
