New Zealand riding sensation James McDonald will postpone an attempt to land his 200th win of the season in his homeland to ride at the Tattersall's Tiara meeting at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

McDonald recently eclipsed Lisa Cropp's 197 wins in the 2004-05 season and is within one win of becoming the first Kiwi jockey to ride 200 winners in a season.

He missed the milestone when he failed to ride a winner at Ruakaka on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old, who won his first Group One in Australia aboard Scarlett Lady in the Queensland Oaks, has four early rides including Pontiana in the Group One Tiara (1400m) and Kiwi stayer Smoking Chimneys in the Group Three Tattersall's Cup (2200m).

McDonald rode Smoking Chimneys when successful on a heavy track last start in the Foxton Cup (2200m) on June 6 but is having his first ride on Pontiana who ran third in the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm last start.

Smoking Chimneys, a seven-year-old son of Generous, has started only 30 times in his career due to injury for six wins and seven placings.

He had almost 18 months off recovering from two setbacks following his third in the New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton in 2009.

"He was badly injured and was out for a while," trainer David Haworth said.

"I thought if he could win the Foxton Cup last start we'd give him a go over here.

"It was his fourth run back after the New Zealand Cup and he was three wide and won really well."

Smoking Chimneys spent a long time in the paddock recovering from a knee injury he suffered when third to My Scotsgrey in the Group Three New Zealand Cup in November 2009.

"The track was hard that day and he jarred his knee but we couldn't find anything wrong," Haworth said.

"Then he was getting ready for the spring when he damaged a stifle and fractured a bone high up."

Haworth is on his first trip to Queensland with a horse and is enjoying the winter sunshine.

"I"ve never had a runner here but I've taken horses to Sydney and Melbourne," he said.

"His main mission here is the Queensland Cup but if he runs well on Saturday he'll go to the Caloundra Cup next week."

The Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) will be run on Saturday week with the Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm the following week.
