Trainer Ron Maund has reservations that Ice Chariot can repeat the surprise early sprint form he displayed in Sydney last spring when he makes his comeback at Eagle Farm.

Ice Chariot will start on his long road to the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on Anzac Day when he resumes in Saturday's Lisa Mayne 40th Birthday Handicap (1200m).

Ice Chariot, winner of the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) in 2006, has not started since the Melbourne Cup in November when he finished 11th to the Bart Cummings-trained Viewed.

The Melbourne Cup came at the end of a seven-start spring campaign which kicked off with a shock third at $101 in the Group Two Theo Marks (1300m) at Rosehill in September.

"He's been back in my stables at Toowoomba for about six weeks after he did pre-training in Victoria," Maund said.

"He did surprise me the day he ran third first-up in Sydney last campaign but I doubt he can do that again in this race."

Maund said big weights from handicappers in Queensland had forced his hand to send Ice Chariot to Sydney for the autumn.

"With the weights he keeps getting here he'll have to follow the carnivals," Maund said.

"He's got 61 kilos in a Quality race on Saturday so I would hate to think what he'd get in a normal open race.

"He's going to Sydney after a run or two in Brisbane and will run in the Sydney Cup and maybe The BMW along the way."

The weight-for-age Group One The BMW (2400m) will be run at Rosehill on April 4, the same day as the $3.5 million Group One Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).

Maund, who also will saddle up stablemate Vocalic against Ice Chariot, was delighted with the stayer's spring form which included placings in the Group Three Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick and Group Two Cathay Pacific (2500m) at Moonee Valley, both in October.

Ice Chariot also made ground late to finish eighth, beaten less than 4-1/2 lengths, to Godolphin's All The Good in the Group One Caulfield Cup (2400m).

"He should have been in the money in the Caulfield Cup and his Melbourne Cup run was great," Maund said.

"He had the outside barrier in the Melbourne Cup and gave them 30 lengths start at the halfway mark.

"Then halfway down the straight he got to within five lengths of the leaders but couldn't hold on."

Toowoomba jockey Phillip Wolfgram will make his comeback from a broken wrist with the ride on Ice Chariot while Ric McMahon will partner Vocalic.

Vocalic hasn't started since finishing last to the Bryan Guy-trained Masai Pride in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 10.
