In-form stayer Light Vision has history against him as he attempts to improve his Melbourne Cup prospects through Wednesday's Geelong Cup (2406m).

The five-year-old has 57.5kg but only Craftsman with 60.5kg in 1966 has carried more to win the Geelong Cup since it transferred to its spring date in 1947.

Trainer Robert Smerdon conceded Light Vision was facing a big task but has taken some hope that he is a chance of success with the race's 53kg minimum weight.

"I thought he might have got 57kg but there is a little bit of compression with the weights," Smerdon said.

"It is a big ask but if he is to be a genuine Melbourne Cup contender he has to carry that weight.

"If he can't then we will have to lower our sights and look at something like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on the last day of the carnival."

Light Vision has won three of his past four starts including the Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) carrying 56.5kg at Flemington on October 4.

Ben Melham has ridden the son of Zerpour at his last four runs and will again partner him at Geelong.

Light Vision is related to 1990 Geelong Cup winner Mr Brooker who went on to finish third to Kingston Rule and The Phantom in the Melbourne Cup.

Mr Brooker's half-sister Mrs Brooker is Light Vision's grand-dam.

The Geelong Cup has attracted a capacity field and all 17 runners are still in the Melbourne Cup.

Light Vision is 38th in order of elimination, just behind other Geelong Cup contenders Guyno (29th) and Zavite (37th).

Zavite finished second in last year's Geelong Cup to The Fuzz who gave trainer David Hayes his first win in the race while he was the third Geelong Cup winner for jockey Craig Williams after Savrocca (2000) and Mandela (2006).

This year Williams will ride the Hayes-trained Largo Lad who was beaten two lengths last start when fifth to Douro Valley in the Group One Yalumba Stakes (2000m).

Largo Lad needs to win the Geelong Cup to qualify for the Melbourne Cup because he is 72nd in the order of elimination.

Damien Oliver will hoping to revisit history when he rides Bauer, 43rd in Melbourne Cup order of entry, for English trainer Luca Cumani.

In 2002 Oliver won the Geelong Cup on Irish raider Media Puzzle who went on to a memorable Melbourne Cup win.

Last start Bauer finished seventh to Caulfield Cup winner All The Good in the Newburgh Handicap (2671m) in England.

Bart Cummings will chase his first Geelong Cup win with Caulfield Cup emergency Moatize and unqualified Melbourne Cup contender Dandaad.

Both horses need to win and get a weight penalty to have a chance of lining up in the Melbourne Cup.

Other Geelong Cup runners well down the Melbourne Cup order of elimination are Inkster (48th) who dead-heated in the VRC St Leger Stakes, Glistening (49th), The Metropolitan Handicap placegetter Get Up Jude (50th), The Wolverine (56th), and Magic Instint (57th).

Making up the Cup field are unqualified Melbourne Cup contenders Britomart (71st), Cranbourne Cup placegetter Chantal Sally (73rd), Foolish Lad (74th), Banana Man (78th) and Fast Ruler (79th).
