Jockey Glen Boss may have to eat his words if lightly-raced filly Lamarr emerges from restricted grade to win the Group Two Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley.

Boss said the daughter of Quest For Fame was not as good as her connections thought when he was beaten on her two starts ago at Sandown on January 24.

She has since won in restricted grade by seven lengths at Moonee Valley and on Saturday goes into the 1500m Classic the second favourite at $5.50.

TAB Sportsbet has Romneya, the winner of The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington two weeks ago, at the top of market at $3.80.

Stewards opened an inquiry into Boss's ride on Lamarr after trainer Mark Kavanagh complained she was ridden against instructions on the fence and finished fifth.

"The horse had every chance. She's not as good as they think," Boss told stewards.

Stewards later agreed with Boss that it was reasonable for him to improve his position on Lamarr in the middle stages by racing closer to the fence to save ground.

Last start Kavanagh put blinkers on Lamarr for the first time which clearly switched her on, but he questioned whether she would have been as dominant if the 72-class race had been run at a track other than Moonee Valley.

"I am not sure that she was that much better than the others last start," Kavanagh said.

"The blinkers helped but the Moonee Valley surface helped as well."

Kavanagh said Lamarr could develop into a Moonee Valley specialist and he is happy for her to be taking on the better fillies on the StrathAyr track.

He said Lamarr would find it a much harder assignment on Saturday but if she ran well she could target richer fillies' races in the autumn.

"She is up against the best fillies going around at the moment and if you don't try them out against the best you never know," Kavanagh said.

"We are certainly going to find out how good she is and hopefully she will measure up for the better three-year-old fillies races coming up."

Lamarr is a three-quarter sister to stakeswinner Woppitt and her third dam is 1987 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Midnight Fever.

She has only raced five times for two wins and a third and Michael Rodd, who won on her last start, will ride her again.

Trainer Lee Freedman is confident Romneya can win again.

"Whatever beats her will win," Freedman said.

He said the danger could be stablemate Estee who finished fifth in The Vanity.
