Lady Avacan will attempt to emulate the likes of Puramaka and Samosiera in Thursday's Listed Warrnambool Cup.

Prepared at Naracoorte by Sue Jaensch, the Akhadan mare will be out to complete the Hamilton Cup (2200m)-Warrnambool Cup (2350m) double.

Puramaka, prepared by Kevin Lafferty, landed the double twice, in 1977/78, and went on to win four Hamilton Cups by also winning that race in 1979/80.

The Robert Smerdon-trained Samosiera completed the double in 2001.

Jockey Brad Rawiller has ridden Lady Avacan at her past two starts for an unlucky seventh to Bourbonstreetblues in the Stawell Cup (2000m) when disappointed for a run and in her Hamilton Cup victory under 58kg.

The Caulfield Cup-winning jockey believes the five-year-old can win again.

"She's a great chance, she's in great form. It was really heavy at Hamilton and she handled it well, she's drawn well (in barrier five) and on the last day there's probably a good chance you'll need to get off (the rail)," Rawiller said.

"But we'll be able to get covered up until we need to get out and get going.

"It's a stronger race again but she's on the up and in with a good weight (54.5kg) after carrying big weights, but I'm pretty sure I'll be riding her a half over but I think with 55kg she'll still be a great chance."

Cup rival Kibbutz hasn't won since taking out the Victoria Derby (2500m) 2-1/2 years ago.

But Warrnambool trainer Jarrod McLean is confident he will run a really good race after his encouraging fourth to Hawks Bay over 2000m when second-up at Flemington on Anzac Day.

"I'm delighted with him. I was rapt with his run last week and he meets Hissing Sid (last year's Warrnambool Cup winner) two kilos better for that," McLean said.

"I'm looking forward to seeing him on soft ground and I reckon he'll run very well.

"Craig Williams said he felt great and he wanted to be there and he's trying so I guess that's all you can ask for in a horse.

"The extra 350 metres in distance will suit and I'm really looking forward to it."

Hissing Sid who finished third, 2-1/4 lengths ahead of Kibbutz, at Flemington, hasn't won since last year's Cup but goes up 1kg to 58kg on his winning weight 12months ago.

Kibbutz, who came to McLean from the David Hayes stable for his spring campaign last year, finished a solid fourth to The Sportsman in the Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) in October.

He then picked up $115,000 in prizemoney for running ninth to Shocking in the Melbourne Cup (3200m).

McLean said a Warrnambool Cup victory would qualify the Golan five-year-old for the 150th Melbourne Cup but plans were still up in the air.

"We have the option of going to Brisbane or to the Andrew Ramsden at Flemington, but we'll get over Thursday first," he said.

The Smerdon stable has three Cup prospects in topweight Light Vision,(Mark Zahra), Come On Cugat (Danny Nikolic) and Persian Star (Glen Boss).
