Victoria Derby winner Kibbutz is out of the Caulfield Cup after failing to recover from a foot abscess.
His scratching gives trainer Danny O'Brien three runners in the Cup with the promotion of Barbaricus from first emergency.
O'Brien's other starters are Master O'Reilly and Douro Valley who ran the quinella in the Cup last year.
Melbourne Cup plans are still alive for Kibbutz but trainer David Hayes was unhappy with the horse's progress since the abscess burst on Sunday night.
"It's not the end of the world," Hayes said.
"We have really got the Melbourne Cup in mind for him."
It is likely that Kibbutz will have his next start in the Group One Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) three days before the Melbourne Cup on November 4.
Kibbutz had been struggling for form this campaign after a hoof injury prevented him racing in the autumn.
He was the least fancied of Hayes' three Cup runners at $51 with TAB Sportsbet before his scratching today.
Craig Williams will ride stablemate Guillotine ($10) and Glen Boss is booked for Hayes' other runner Zagreb ($18).
