Rosehill trainer Con Karakatsanis, who fears he may have broken his leg in a track fall, is looking for a lucky break with News Alert in Saturday's Listed Kevin Heffernan Stakes at Sandown.

Friday the 13th got off to a bad start for Karakatsanis when he was thrown from a horse he was riding in trackwork at Caulfield.

Karakatsanis said he was on a galloper for trainer Byron Cozamanis when it decided to put on a rodeo show and dumped him.

"It had a bit of a buck for while and I stayed on for a pretty good time before it finally got me," Karakatsanis said.

Karakatsanis landed awkwardly and has lost most of the mobility in his left leg.

"At this stage it is pretty swollen but I am just putting it off (going to hospital)," Karakatsanis said.

"I want to see if the swelling comes down and I can get a bit more movement back in it."

Karakatsanis said he would be hobbling around at Sandown on Saturday and would leave the saddling-up duties to his foreman.

News Alert is the big-race hope for the stable but Karakatsanis also has Mr Slick engaged in the Rokk Ebony Handicap (1300m).

The Tony Vasil-trained Lucky Secret dominates TAB Sportsbet's Heffernan Stakes market at $1.80 ahead of News Alert ($4.60) and Falaise ($5).

Karakatsanis is banking on News Alert being able to run out the 1300 metres better than Lucky Secret who is on trial at the distance.

"Obviously he (Lucky Secret) he is the class horse in the race but hopefully he doesn't see out the 1300 metres," Karakatsanis said.

"To run second to Lucky Secret would still be a good result but I would be rapt if we can win."

Karakatsanis has ruled out News Alert getting into a speed war with Lucky Secret who has won 13 of his 22 starts.

"Wherever Lucky Secret goes we will be just behind him biding our time, stalking him," Karakatsanis said.

"He (News Alert) is ridden best if he sits just off the leaders and then he can finish off."

The long uphill straight may play into the hands of jockey Darren Gauci and News Alert who has twice raced at 1300 metres for two seconds.

Last start he was a fast-finishing fourth when beaten 2-1/2 lengths by Eagle Falls in the Group Two Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day after scoring in fast time over 1100 metres in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1100m) at Randwick.

Lucky Secret won his only start at Sandown as a three-year-old in June 2007 and, after breaking the 1100-metre course record at Caulfield in last month's Schillaci Stakes, last start was beaten a length when fifth to Apache Cat in the Group Two Schweppes Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on October 24.
