Seven years ago Greg Hickman produced Royal Purler to score an upset Group One victory on Epsom Handicap day at Randwick and he is hoping to stage a similar coup with Definite Choice on Saturday.

Royal Purler started at $31 in the 2002 Flight Stakes when she edged out Victory Vein to end that filly's quest for a clean sweep of the Princess Series.

Definite Choice will be at similar odds in the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on Saturday and Hickman isn't discounting a similar result.

"Let's hope so," Hickman said.

"They are actually a bit similar in that Royal Purler wasn't ridden that well in the Tea Rose at her previous start.

"While Definite Choice wasn't ridden too badly at Newcastle, the race didn't pan out how we wanted, we thought he would settle a bit closer in the run.

"The horse has pulled up well and I don't think he is as rough a chance as the market might suggest."

Definite Choice was at $21 with TAB Sportsbet on Thursday with betting headed by AJC Champagne Stakes winner Onemorenomore at $2.30.

The Hickman-trained colt has had five runs this time in including a second-up victory over 1400 metres at Rosehill in August.

Last time out he wasn't disgraced in the Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle, finishing seventh and just over 1-1/2 lengths from the winner Lovemelikearock.

"His run the other day at Newcastle was eye-catching," Hickman said.

"He has improved since then and we always had this race at the back of our minds for him.

"The race at Newcastle was slowly run which didn't suit him."

One major positive for Definite Choice on Saturday will be Darren Beadman.

The champion rider is now based in Hong Kong but is making the trip back to Sydney to ride at Randwick where his mounts include Fiumicino in the Metropolitan Handicap and Rollins in the Epsom.

Hickman and Beadman have enjoyed success together in the past and once the Warwick Farm trainer heard the jockey would be back in town he was on the phone to book him for Definite Choice.

"There is no-one better and that's why we chased him," Hickman said.

"He won the Prime Minister's Cup for me on Sir Dex. It was a gem of a ride too."

Definite Choice has drawn barrier two, directly inside Onemorenomore.

Spring Stakes winner Lovemelikearock, the only filly in the race after trainer Anthony Cummings opted to pay the late entry fee, will jump from gate seven.
