Hay List may have to undergo a special veterinary inspection before being cleared to run against Black Caviar in the Group One BTC Cup at Doomben on Saturday.

Queensland's chief racing steward Wade Birch plans to speak with Hay List's trainer John McNair following reports Hay List threw a shoe in trackwork at Gosford on Monday.

"I'm not too concerned. If stewards want to vet him I won't lose any sleep over it," McNair said.

Birch read reports of the trackwork scare and planned to ring McNair as soon as possible to decide if Hay List should undergo a thorough a veterinary inspection.

"I'll ring John and if need be we'll get our own vet to inspect the horse," Birch said.

"It's a Group One race and in circumstances like this we may need an inspection to ensure Hay List is fit and suitable to race."

McNair will float Hay List, who has a history of feet problems, to Queensland on Thursday night to avoid the hype surrounding the first Group One of the Brisbane winter carnival.

McNair expects a stronger showing from Hay List when he steps into the ring against the world champion Black Caviar for a fourth time.

"Over 1200 metres Black Caviar seems to have our measure but once they step out further in distance it'll be a different story," a confident McNair declared.

"We've met three times and so far it's three-zip to Black Caviar.

"I just hope we can get on a dead track.

"The first time Hay List met her he was injured and the second time he hurt his shoulder coming out of the gates.

"When they met the last time in the TJ Smith he went into the race after the Challenge Stakes which he only just won after missing a bit of work."

McNair said the latest trackwork scare was nothing unusual for Hay List.

"There's no damage and it's a regular occurrence with him," McNair said.

"He didn't do any damage like he has done in the past.

"The vet I've got is very clever and he was quick to fix him."

McNair is hoping the decision to depart Gosford later in the week will work in the five-year-old's favour.

"I know what the pressure is like and what Peter (Moody) must be going through up in Brisbane," McNair said.

"I copped the same pressure before Hay List won the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.

"All the pressure got a bit too much for me."

Meanwhile Black Caviar showed she had taken no harm from her long float trip from Melbourne last week when she worked strongly in her second Brisbane track gallop at Doomben on Tuesday.
