Odds-on favourite Hay List is under an injury cloud ahead of the Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Trainer John McNair advised Racing Victoria stewards on Wednesday that the last-start Newmarket Handicap winner had been treated for a bruised near-fore heel.

Hay List eased marginally from $1.35 favouritism to $1.40 for Friday night's William Reid (1200m) after stewards scheduled a veterinary inspection of the gelding for Thursday afternoon.

Buffering, who was beaten in a photo-finish by Hay List in the Newmarket at Flemington on March 10, firmed from $10 to $9.

Meanwhile, Group One-winning mare Lone Rock has convinced trainer Robert Smerdon to run her in the William Reid despite her last-start Newmarket failure.

Smerdon was mystified by arguably the worst performance of Lone Rock's career when second last of 22 runners but can find no reason not to run her at the Valley.

"We were going to give her a short break but I suppose you can forgive them one bad run," Smerdon said.

"Last time she was disappointing without explanation.

"We gave her a few easy days after the Newmarket and then did a few checks and blood tests and everything came up clear.

"She hasn't missed a beat and because she is so well in herself the decision was made to go for this race."

Lone Rock finished fifth to Black Caviar at her only other run this campaign in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 18.

Smerdon said that Lone Rock had shown in the past she can rebound off a bad run.

Last spring she was beaten nearly eight lengths over 1000 metres at Moonee Valley and next start scored an upset win at $21 in the Group Three Bobbie Lewis (1200m) at Flemington.

Her biggest win was the Group One Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville at $31 in May last year while as a three-year-old she showed a liking for Moonee Valley when she won the Group Three Champagne Stakes (1200m).

"She's put in a bad run before but she can bounce back and that's what we are hoping for Friday night," Smerdon said.

"She's been quite effective at Moonee Valley, and at night.

Craig Williams replaces Glen Boss on Lone Rock who is one of the outsiders at $31 with TAB Sportsbet.

She has drawn barrier five alongside Hay List in barrier four in the eight-horse field.

Buffering has drawn immediately to Hay List's inside in gate three while Foxwedge ($12), who was third in the Newmarket, has the rails.

Buffering's stablemate Woorim ($12) is a backmarker and looks suitably drawn on the outside of the field.

Beaded (two) ran a career-worst 11th in the Newmarket and is at $15 ahead of Cox Plate third placegetter Rekindled Interest ($16) in barrier six.

The Peter Moody-trained Mid Summer Music has barrier seven and is the other $31 outsider.
