Star sprinter Hay List is in doubt for the Expressway Stakes after jarring up during an exhibition gallop at Rosehill on Saturday.

Hay List galloped with the David Payne trained Centennial Park with the pair timed at a sizzling 31.84 seconds for their final 600 metres.

The track was upgraded from a good (3) to a good (2) later in the day and trainer John McNair said the hard ground had taken its toll.

McNair said Hay List was pretty sore and sorry on Sunday and he would monitor him this week in the hope he would still be able to take his place in the Group Two Expressway (1200m) on February 5.

"I'll know more towards the end of the week," McNair said.

"If we have to go straight to the Lightning then we will but I really want him to race here so the Sydney public can see him.

"It's frustrating to have to go back to the drawing board.

"I didn't realise the track was so hard but they ran sensational time so it must have been firm.

"I put his feet in ice today and I'll walk and swim him tomorrow and also get the chiropractor to go over him.

"But I won't really know too much until I get on his back.

"If we have to miss the Expressway it doesn't do much to his preparation and it's not his main goal this autumn.

"It's just disappointing this has happened. Because of his size he hits the ground harder than most horses anyway."

McNair estimated the hulking sprinter was between 610 and 615 kilograms which is close to his racing weight.

"He has been up to 635 kilograms and the lowest I've had him is 608," he said.

The Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington two weeks after the Expressway is the scheduled starting point for unbeaten mare Black Caviar.

Formerly trained in Western Australia, Hay List joined McNair's NSW Central Coast stable last year and claimed a Group One victory in the Manikato Stakes in the early spring.

He was not at his best when soundly beaten in the Patinack Farm (1200m) on November 6 won by Black Caviar with McNair keen for a rematch.
