Hay List will be given a searching gallop at Gosford on Thursday with trainer John McNair keen to get race rider Glyn Schofield's assessment of the sprinter's condition.

McNair, who rides Hay List in his work and most of his fast gallops, says the Group One-winning sprinter has given the impression he is almost back to peak condition.

Hay List had a few problems when comprehensively beaten in the Patinack Farm Classic won by Black Caviar but McNair is looking forward to him matching it with the mare again in the autumn.

"Ideally I want him to gallop with a companion on Thursday so he gets a solid run," McNair said.

"I'm looking forward to Glyn's assessment of him.

"The horse looks fit and his weight hasn't got away on me too much which is pleasing.

"There's still no decision on whether he resumes in the Expressway in Sydney or the Lightning in Melbourne or runs in both.

"The weather could also be a factor because he is not at his best on wet tracks.

"At the moment he would be attractively weighted for the Newmarket Handicap so we have to look at protecting that as well.

"There is still a lot to consider as well as Dubai and Singapore after he runs here."

Hay List suffered a cut to a leg in the lead-up to the Patinack Farm Classic which McNair said affected his performance and he finished 11 lengths behind Black Caviar.

Prior to that race he put together three wins in Melbourne, the second of which was a comprehensive victory in the Group One Manikato Stakes.

McNair said Hay List had been inoculated ahead of a possible tilt at the Golden Shaheen at the Dubai World Cup meeting at the end of March and the KrisFlyer Sprint in Singapore in May.
