A dynamic win by Palacio De Cristal in the Group Two Villiers Stakes at Randwick has trainer Grahame Begg aiming higher in the autumn.

The mare came from last to reel in the field and lead in a quinella for her owner Gerry Harvey when she beat Parfumier by a neck.

Palacio De Cristal was the best backed runner with TAB Sportsbet in the two days leading up to Saturday's 1600m feature, coming in to $7.50 from $12 and starting $6.50 on course.

Palacio De Cristal showed a lot of promise in the spring of 2008 but circumstances went against her in the autumn of this year.

She returned to winning form last Friday week and franked that lower grade win with a sparkling effort that thrilled Begg.

"I think the key to her is good tracks," Begg said.

"I also think she is better over shorter distances.

"Her mother won a Queensland Oaks and I set her for an Oaks campaign in the autumn.

"But she struck wet tracks and she also pulls too hard in the longer races and never settles.

"I've learned from the mistakes and we can move on to races like the Coolmore Classic and Doncaster in the autumn."

Parfumier is trained by Pat Webster and his partner and son Wayne who was trackside and excited when the gelding hit the lead.

"Almost," he said.

"But it's a lot easier to look up and see Gerry Harvey's name beside them both.

"I'm very happy for him, he supports our stable and deserves the success."

Ironically, Harvey is the co-proprietor of the Magic Millions sales company with Saturday's race day sponsored by rival William Inglis and Son.

The win was the biggest for Peter Wells since he came out of his apprenticeship earlier this year and his ride earned praise from Begg.

"He rode her exactly as I said," Begg said.

"I told him to be patient because she has such great acceleration and he did everything right.

"I knew there would be speed on so I wasn't concerned at how far back she was."

Wells, who won the 2008 Group One Metropolitan on Newport as an apprentice, said he was thrilled to win such a prestigious race.

"In the straight she just went bang," he said.

"It's a big thrill and it's my biggest win as a senior rider."

Spinney ($18) ran his usual honest race to finish third a head behind Parfumier, with favourite Rabbuka ($3.70) fourth.

Queenslander Rags To Riches ($41) weakened to finish 11th of the 13 runners after setting up a big lead down the back straight.

Harvey had three runners in the race with Love And Kisses last, 4-1/2 lengths from the winner.

His racing manager Claire Bird said her boss would be thrilled with the result.

"Gerry will be happy, he wouldn't mind which way they finished," she said.

"But it's especially pleasing for the mare because it gives her black type and that's important for her future."
