Trainer Robbie Griffiths has decided to split the summer campaigns of stablemates Happy Glen and Cocinero.

Griffiths had the two sprinters nominated for Saturday's Group Three Rubiton Stakes (1100m) but has plotted an easier path for Cocinero in Friday night's Ashley's Kids Rides Flying (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

"I want to try and win a race with him and get his confidence up," Griffiths said.

Cocinero hasn't won a race since the Christmas Stakes on Boxing Day 2007 and last start finished seventh to Rubiton contender Mind Your Head in the same feature.

Griffiths said the Encosta De Lago seven-year-old gave the impression there was still a good win in him and if he fired at Moonee Valley he could return for the Group Two Carlyon Stakes (1200m) on January 23.

Cocinero ran second to El Segundo in the 2007 Carlyon but last year only struggled when second last to Let Go Thommo.

Griffiths said Happy Glen deserved his chance at weight-for-age in the Rubiton.

"We go from a handicap to weight-for-age but he's on the up," Griffiths said.

Griffiths declared Lucky Secret and Let Go Thommo as clearly the horses to beat.

"Lucky Secret looks like he's got a mortgage on it if he's right," Griffiths said.

"Let Go Thommo is the class horse of the field and will have appreciated his first-up run and is coming back to weight-for-age."

Happy Glen is in cracking form, winning his last four starts, starting with the 0-72 victory at Moe in November.

He has looked beaten at his last three starts but somehow manufactured victories against open class fields at Moonee Valley, Caulfield and Flemington.

"He just seems to have lion's heart at the moment. He just wants to win."

Steven King will ride Let Go Thommo, who last year finished second to Here De Angels in the Rubiton.
