Glen Boss will make his first appearance at this year's Brisbane winter carnival and will shout fellow jockey Larry Cassidy a beer if Sydney filly Graceful Anna wins the Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Cassidy has been the filly's regular rider but is under suspension forcing him to part company with Graceful Anna for Saturday's 1400-metre $1 million feature.

Boss has been riding in Melbourne for the past 12 months since his shock decision to quit Sydney racing and hasn't received many offers to head back to his home state this winter.

That was until he got a call last weekend from Cassidy who persuaded Boss to ride Graceful Anna who has a featherweight 49.5 kilograms in the Stradbroke.

Boss, 40, has won 73 Group One races during his career including three Melbourne Cups on Makybe Diva and last year's Cox Plate on the Bart Cummings-trained So You Think.

Boss rates the favourite Whobegotyou as easily the best horse in the Stradbroke but gives Graceful Anna a great chance of causing an upset from barrier two.

Since taking Cassidy's call, Boss has studied replays of Graceful Anna's winter performances and was impressed with the three-year-old's fourth to Catapulted in the Group Two QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

"I've studied a few of her replays and her last run was very good," Boss said.

"The big thing she has in her favour is her weight.

"She's got a very good record and she gets a lot of weight off the topweight.

"I'll buy Larry a beer if she wins. He's got more money than me."

Boss is renowned for his hard work which has led to him winning four Group Ones this season and won't have any trouble riding Graceful Anna at her Stradbroke weight.

"I rode So You Think at 49.5 kilos in the Cox Plate but it's always a struggle getting down to these weights," he said.

Boss is enjoying his time in Melbourne and believes the move has been the best decision of his career.

"I've been living in Melbourne for just over a year now and I'm loving it," Boss said.

"It's the best thing I've ever done in my life and my family is very happy.

"I couldn't get a ride when I was in Sydney and if someone can tell me why I'll be very relieved.

"But I'm not whingeing because I'm very happy to be in Melbourne. It's by far a better place than Sydney."

Graceful Anna's trainer David Pfieffer doesn't want to see the filly get as far back in the Stradbroke as she did in the QTC Cup.

"The plan wasn't to get that far back last run but that's just how the race panned out for her," Pfieffer said.

"It was a good run and a good test as she's never been that far back and out of her comfort zone like that before.

"It would have been an interesting finish had she got out earlier."

Pfieffer was thrilled when Graceful Anna drew gate two at Wednesday's barrier draw.

"All the good draws had gone when it was our turn," he said.

"There were only two good draws left and she got one of them."

Pfieffer has been training for just over two years and hasn't won a metropolitan race in Sydney as he stares at a possible Group One winner in Queensland.

His biggest victory was with Graceful Anna in the Magic Millions Trophy at the Gold Coast in January.
