Canberra mare Gathering Light has come through a torrid last-start run well and is ready to make amends at Randwick on Wednesday.

Trainer Matthew Dale, who is holidaying in the United States, said the only concern was if the Kensington track became too heavy.

The Carnegie mare is an acceptor for the Eastlakes Handicap (1800m).

Track manager Dave Hodgson said the surface was hit with 6.5 millimetres of rain early on Tuesday morning which forced a downgrade from a slow (7) to a heavy (8).

But Hodgson said he was hopeful the track could recover to a slow (6) with good drying conditions on Tuesday.

"If it gets too heavy then we'll have to scratch her which would be a shame because she looks very well placed, hopefully conditions do improve," Dale said from Los Angeles.

"She's backing up after a tough run on a very heavy track.

"We've just kept her ticking over and she's come through the run and has done well and on form she looks like the one to beat."

Gathering Light finished more than five lengths last to With Ice at Randwick last Tuesday over 2000 metres.

Two weeks earlier she revelled on the slow (7) Canterbury surface when she led all the way to defeat Matchless by 2-1/2 lengths over 1900 metres.

Prior to that Gathering Light was beaten 1-1/4 lengths by Toulon Bay at Canterbury on a heavy (9).

The third placegetter from that race, Bellevent, was a subsequent winner at Canterbury last Wednesday and is nominated for Saturday's Randwick meeting.

Pre-post markets have Gathering Light as the $2.80 favourite ahead of Ready To Reign and All Black Miss who are locked on the second line of betting at $3.80.

Warwick Farm trainer Gary Portelli has ruled both of his runners, Gunner Knox and Typhoon Fury, out of the Randwick meeting because of the wet track.

Two-year-old Gunner Knox was down to run in the Pagewood Handicap (1150m) while three-year-old Typhoon Fury, who ran 10th to Sebring in the 2008 Golden Slipper, was being aimed at the Hillsdale Plate (1150m).

"It's getting pretty frustrating these wet tracks but there's nothing we can do about it," Portelli said.
