Lee Freedman says a hefty weight turnaround will give Lonhro colt Territory the chance to turn the tables on boom three-year-old Bigelow in Saturday's Group Two Sandown Guineas.
Already a stakeswinner, Territory last start gave away 4.5kg to the Clinton McDonald-trained Bigelow when beaten a half-length in finishing third in last week's Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m).
"I think with nearly a 5kg turnaround my horse really only has to run the 1600 metres to be a really good chance on Saturday," Freedman said.
Territory is at $7 with TAB Sportsbet while Bigelow is second favourite at $4.80 behind Pressday ($3.80).
Freedman said he expected Territory to again race forward at level weights in the Guineas.
Three starts ago he led all the way to win the Listed Doncaster Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.
"I am not saying he will lead on Saturday but he races forward and I don't see any reason to change tactics going to the mile," Freedman said.
He said the forecast for heavy rain didn't dampen his enthusiasm for the colt who has raced seven times for two wins and four minor placings.
"He didn't really get through that total bog at Caulfield (when fifth) prior to his Flemington run last start but he ran well on a heavy track at Sandown when first-up in September," Freedman said.
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy has won the last two Sandown Guineas for Darley on Caymans (2008) and Kidnapped (2009) and will again wear the famous maroon and white colours on Territory.
Freedman's past Sandown Guineas were Scenic Warrior (2000) and Moon Dragon (2001).
McDonald remains positive about the chances of Bigelow who he says had an easy week after his narrow but impressive win last Saturday.
The winner of three of his four starts he is lining up for the third week in a row and has impressed the stable with his constitution.
"He is a horse who keeps taking giant leaps each run and there is no reason why he won't again tomorrow," McDonald told radio station Sport 927.
"We respect the opposition but we are quietly confident he can go there and finish in the money."
Bigelow flashed home from last in the Hilton but McDonald believes Brad Rawiller will have him closer to the speed in the Guineas.
Goldstone ($5.50) and Condelago ($8) are the only two runners in the Guineas who last start contested the Carbine Club Stakes, which is a significant form line given the last three Guineas winners all ran in that race.
Goldstone finished second and Condelago third to Mr Chard in the Flemington race on Derby Day.
