Above Average has never been beaten by Sydney Cup favourite Mourayan and Lee Freedman is upbeat that trend can continue at Randwick on Saturday.

Freedman will saddle-up imported stayer Above Average in the Group One 3200m feature and says the son of High Chaparral has had a great preparation for the Cup.

"We're really upbeat about his prospects," Freedman said.

Above Average is at $13 with TAB Sportsbet while the Lloyd Williams-owned Mourayan, last start runner-up in the Group One BMW (2400m), is favourite at $6 ahead of Once Were Wild, C'est La Guerre and Hawk Island ($7).

"I think he's right in the market for the Sydney Cup," Freedman said.

"I see Mourayan is favourite but I don't think Mourayan has ever beaten him home when they've met. (Above Average) beat him home in the Sandown Cup and he beat him home again in the Manion Cup.

"He's had a good preparation and we've given him some schooling as well which I think he needed just to sharpen him a bit."

Above Average has only started twice over the Sydney Cup distance for a third in the Group Three Jockey Club Cup in the UK as a three-year-old and then second in last year's Sandown Cup in Melbourne.

"He's a real two miler and that's a big thing going into the race," Freedman said.

The five-year-old, who will be ridden by Melbourne Cup-winning hoop Corey Brown, will travel to Sydney overnight on Thursday.

Freedman brought the entire to Sydney for the Listed Manion Cup (2400m) on March 26 when he ran a close second to Bid Spotter and then he returned to Victoria where he was third in a Caulfield Open Handicap over 2400m on April 9 with 59kg.

He is handicapped at 51.5kg for the Sydney Cup but weights are expected to be raised 2.5kg at acceptance time on Wednesday.

"He's been pretty spot-on, he ran a great race in the Manion Cup and then he came back home and ran at Caulfield and was probably a good thing beaten carrying 60kg with the vest," Freedman said.

"He is dropping a lot in weight and I think he's got a great chance."
