Anthony Cummings isn't running scared of Fontelina's rivals in the Group One TJ Smith at Eagle Farm and is confident the colt can give him his second win in Saturday's 1600-metre feature.

Cummings won the TJ Smith with Outback Prince in 2004 and has compared Fontelina favourably with his former star.

"Fontelina is every bit as good as Outback Prince," Cummings said.

"There's a fair bit of upside to him."

Outback Prince went into the TJ Smith as a seasoned two-year-old campaigner with eight starts under his belt unlike Fontelina who goes into this year's race at only his third start.

Fontelina showed he was well above average when comfortably winning the Listed The Phoenix, formerly the Doomben Slipper, over 1350 metres last month.

That was the son of Testa Rossa's maiden victory and came off a debut second in an 1100-metre maiden at Canterbury 10 days earlier.

"Outback Prince had a lot more racing than this bloke has had and was very much a colt," Cummings said.

"This guy is easier to deal with and he's got a similar level of ability."

Outback Prince didn't win at the highest level again following his TJ Smith triumph but was placed three times in Group Ones.

He was runner-up to Cox Plate winner Savabeel in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in 2004 before finishing third the following year in the Rosehill Guineas (1600m) won by Eremein.

He also finished third to Mr Celebrity in the George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in 2005.

Fontelina was bought by Cummings at the Magic Millions Ready To Run Sale at the Gold Coast late last year.

Cummings has no doubt Fontelina has the pedigree to make a successful step up in distance to 1600 metres at only his third start.

Fontelina's grand-dam, Electrique, was a dual Group One winner of the Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in 1991 before claiming the Ansett Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill in her final start the following year.

Cummings has pencilled in an ambitious program for Fontelina in Melbourne during the spring.

"He'll go straight to the paddock after the TJ Smith and will come back for the Golden Rose in Sydney and all the major three-year-old races in Melbourne in the spring," he said.

"The Caulfield Guineas will be one of his main targets."

Cummings is not falling into the same trap as some, doubting favourite Hot Snitzel's ability to cope with 1600 metres.

"The way Hot Snitzel won the Sires he's going to be thereabouts again," Cummings said.

"I thought he went to the line well when he won that day so 1600 metres shouldn't be a problem."
