Trainer John Moloney has good reason to think that Flying Ruby could be a stakes performer of the future, and it is not just because she has scored consecutive last-to-first wins in the last month.

The daughter of 1987 Cox Plate winner Rubiton is the eighth foal from Brigand mare Parkhill's Flyer who is a half-sister to eight-time Group One winner and 1990-91 Australian Racehorse of the Year Better Loosen Up.

"There is a bit of pedigree there," Moloney said.

He said Saturday's Swell Time Handicap (1600m) at Sandown was an important race for Flying Ruby who he hopes will graduate to stakes class next year.

Adelaide black-type races are on her agenda should she remain unbeaten this campaign.

"It is a very important race for her looking to the future," Moloney said.

"Her two wins this campaign have been good and we would like to think that she can go on."

Flying Ruby has won four of her 12 starts but this preparation appears lengths better with exciting wins at Kyneton and Flemington.

Last month at Kyneton she missed the start by six lengths and powered away to an unlikely 2-1/4 length win while at Flemington, from an outside gate, she stormed home from last in the 16-horse field to win in a photo-finish.

She is meeting similar grade horses again at Sandown and Moloney sees no reason why she can't make it three wins in a row.

He said Flying Ruby was more mature than last campaign and that with six months between preparations it was showing in her performances.

"A little bit of extra time has definitely helped her," Moloney said.

He said while Flying Ruby had given away big starts at both her recent runs, he expects she will settle closer from barrier five in the field of 10 on Saturday.

"She is drawn a bit better and she won't be tailed back this time," Moloney said.

"She looks well placed and if she can win this we might freshen her up and give her chance in stakes company in Adelaide."
