Jockey Patrick Ferris remained in an induced coma on life support in Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital on Wednesday following a fall at Muswellbrook on Monday.

Ferris underwent surgery on Monday night to relieve pressure on his brain.

Racing NSW safety officer Maurice Logue said he had spoken to Ferris' family on Wednesday morning and the jockey's condition remained critical but stable, with concerns still over pressure on his brain.

"I've spoken with the family, Pat's father, and the situation is they have some concerns with pressure on the brain," Logue said.

"The concerns are that the pressure is intermittent, it comes and goes.

"The next 24 to 48 hours they'll monitor whether the situation improves.

"If it doesn't they'll have few options but to go in for surgery again."

After he fell from his mount on Monday afternoon, Ferris suffered head injuries when he was galloped on by another horse.
