Jockey Patrick Ferris remains in an induced coma after an operation to relieve pressure on his brain following a race fall at Muswellbrook.

After he fell from his mount on Monday afternoon, Ferris suffered head injuries when he was galloped on by another horse.

He was taken to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital where he underwent surgery on Monday night.

"The next 24 hours will be critical," Racing NSW deputy chief steward Greg Rudolph said.

"Patrick was operated on last night to relieve pressure on his brain.

"The doctors were happy with the operation but he remains in an induced coma and on life support."

Ferris had only just returned to race riding after suffering a collapsed lung and broken ribs in a fall in a barrier trial at Taree in April.
