Patrick Ferris remained in an induced coma in Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital on Thursday, with the next 24 hours crucial in determining whether the jockey has to undergo further surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

Ferris suffered head injuries when he fell from his mount in a race at Muswellbrook on Monday.

"His condition hasn't really changed, he is still on life support in an induced coma," Racing NSW's safety officer Maurice Logue said on Thursday afternoon.

"He had a pretty good night last night but the pressure on his brain is still intermittent.

"If that doesn't change in the next 24 hours they will have to operate again to relieve the pressure.

"Tomorrow we should have a clearer idea whether they'll have to operate."

Logue said the jockey and his family had received plenty of support.

"The family are very appreciative of that fact," he said.
