Liam Birchley is confident Diago can land successive wins on Wednesday to hitch a ride to Melbourne with stablemates Sister Havana and Falco Star.

Diago will be attempting to win for a fourth time from 12 starts in the Sky Racing Handicap (1500m) at Eagle Farm.

Birchley plans to start Sister Havana and Falco Star on VRC Oaks day at Flemington next month and is keen for Diago to join them.

"He has to run well tomorrow but if he does he'll go away with the other two," Birchley said.

"There's a ratings race over 1800 metres on Oaks day which should be ideal for him.

"Falco Star is running in an 1100-metre race that day and Sister Havana will go around in a fillies and mares race over 1200 metres."

Birchley has a good opinion of Diago who joined his stable after finishing last in a field of 12 in a maiden at Gatton in February last year.

"He's a developing type. Stepping up to 1500 metres tomorrow won't worry him as he's been placed over a middle distance (2118m)," Birchley said.

"I got him after he ran last at his first start at Gatton but it's been a maturity thing with him.

"If he shows he can stay there's some good races around for him later on."

Birchley hopes to use the experience as a gauge to his prospects in longer races, possibly during next year's Brisbane winter carnival.

"A trip away to Melbourne will do him good. I'm getting him ready now for longer races as in the future he just might come to the party," he said.

Diago has won three and been placed in another five of his 10 starts for Birchley including an impressive last-start win over 1350 metres at Doomben on October 6.

Birchley is yet to engage a jockey for Diago after Stathi Katsidis, who rode him last start and was engaged for Wednesday, was found dead in his Hendra home early on Tuesday.
