Danleigh has never trialled better and talented three-year-old Masquerader is in for an exciting autumn carnival.

That was the assessment from top jockey Hugh Bowman after he partnered the two quality gallopers at the Rosehill barrier trial session on Tuesday.

Multiple Group One winner Danleigh, never one to overexert himself in trials, sat back and wide before hitting the line well under his own steam in his 900m heat.

The seven-year-old finished out of the placings but Bowman was more than happy with the hitout.

"He's had a good break after the spring, it was the first time I have ridden him this preparation and I was delighted," Bowman said.

"It was the best he's trialled under me and I've probably ridden him in about half a dozen trials."

Bowman's only race ride on Masquerader was in last year's Group One Golden Rose (1400m) when the Lucky Owners colt was beaten just over two lengths into seventh place as favourite.

Hong Kong-based Weichong Marwing was then given the ride on the colt in the Stan Fox Stakes and also the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) when he finished third to Anacheeva.

Masquerader settled midfield on the fence in his 900m heat and looked good as he dived through late along the rail to finish a close third to My Destiny and From The Vault.

"It's the first time I've ridden him since the Golden Rose and I think he's in for a good preparation," Bowman said.

"He had a short, sharp preparation in the spring with not a lot of luck. He went to Melbourne and ran well there and even though he wasn't asked to do a lot this morning he felt very good."

Trainer David Payne is aiming Masquerader at the Group One Randwick Guineas and Group One Doncaster, both over 1600m, and he'll resume in the Group Two Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) on February 12.

Chris Waller is planning to kick off Danleigh's autumn preparation in the Group Two Expressway Stakes (1200m) on February 5, the same race in which he started his 2010 campaign.

"That was ideal," Waller said.

"We never push him much in trials and today was no different. He'll have another trial and then all going to plan he'll run first-up in the Expressway.

"He's probably more forward than he has been in his last couple of preparations so it won't be such a fight to get that little bit of weight off him."
