David Payne has decided against a San Domenico Stakes start for Masquerader after watching the unbeaten colt trial in wet conditions at Rosehill on Tuesday.

The trainer had planned for the Todman Stakes winner to resume in Saturday's San Domenico (1000m) at Randwick but said he would now wait a week.

"He won't run Saturday, I'll keep him for the 1300-metre race (Run To The Rose)," Payne said.

"I don't think he liked the mud (today) and I'm not going to bust him."

Masquerader finished fourth to stablemate Classic Dreams in his 900m trial, which was the ninth heat of the morning.

"He just wasn't at home on that wet ground," jockey Hugh Bowman said.

"It was pretty chopped up by the time he trialled. I think you'll see him better when he's on top of the ground."

The Lucky Owners colt was unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old.

He won on debut at Canterbury before stepping up in class to power to victory in the Group Two Todman Stakes.

A back muscle injury suffered in trackwork on the Tuesday morning before the Golden Slipper ruled him out of the $3.5 million race.

Payne said missing the San Domenico Stakes would not affect the colt's Golden Rose hopes.

"The year before last we ran Stripper in the Golden Rose and she hadn't even had a run before that race," Payne said.

"She ran second and was only just beaten by Duporth."

The San Domenico Stakes has also lost Queenslander Buffering because of the wet track but Golden Slipper runner-up Decision Time, Brightexpectaions, Solar Charged and Obsequious are all expected to take their places.

Sydney's wet weather has also caused a rethink on the starting point for Raihana, a new acquisition for the Payne stable.

The UAE Oaks winner and Derby runner-up had her first trial since joining Payne's team and was given an easy time, finishing a half-head second to Allaboutus in her 900m heat.

Although she will begin her campaign on August 21 as planned, Payne has decided to keep her against her own sex in the Toy Show Quality instead of running her in the weight-for-age Warwick Stakes.

Raihana missed a barrier trial last week because of a chopped up Warwick Farm track.
