TRAINER David Payne and his contemporaries are sweating on the barrier draw after acceptances are taken for Saturday's $1m Golden Rose, reports Brendan Cormick in The Australian.

His report says: Masquerader can give his connections some consolation after he was withdrawn days out from the Golden Slipper earlier this year with a muscle injury. The colt will round off his campaign for this weekend's Group I with a strong workout this morning.

Two years ago, Hugh Bowman played the role of party-pooper when he swept home on Duporth to beat Payne's charge Stripper in the Golden Rose. This time, Payne has adopted the strategy that if you can't beat him, join him where Bowman is concerned.

"The horse has done a lot of pace work, he's hard fit so there are no worries on that score," Payne said. "He can run on any kind of going so that won't matter either. We'd just like to get a good barrier."
