Trainer Darren Weir is cautious about the chances of classy mare Culminate toppling Hot Danish in the Group Two Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield.
Weir said Culminate's spring campaign was back on track after she suffered a boil on her wither but added she faced a huge task to topple the champion Sydney mare on Saturday.
"They say she (Hot Danish) is not that comfortable on wet tracks but she has still got the class," Weir said.
TAB Sportsbet has Hot Danish, who has been placed twice in three heavy track starts, a pronounced $3.20 favourite ahead of No Evidence Needed ($7.50) and Palacio De Cristal ($9) while Culminate is at $18.
Formerly trained by New Zealander Stephen McKee, Culminate was transferred to Weir after being purchased by prominent owner and Ultra Tune boss Sean Buckley on the back of solid performances in Queensland during the winter carnival.
Weir said Culminate had trained on from her first-up sixth in the Group Two Blazer Stakes (1400m) won by Palacio De Cristal who narrowly beat No Evidence Needed.
"She had a minor hiccup with a boil on her wither but I am really happy with her now," Weir said.
He said she would be much fitter for her first-up run and that the Tristarc was a stepping stone to her main spring goal, the Group One Myer Classic (1600m) on Derby Day.
"We got one run behind when we had to scratch her from a 1200-metre race at Caulfield but she has come on nicely from her first-up run," Weir said.
"Her record says that she is a classy mare but she needed the run last time."
Culminate should have no worries with the heavy track conditions as she has started three times on that ground for a win and a second while her slow track record is an impressive three wins from six starts.
Michael Walker, who rides most of Buckley's horses, partnered Culminate last start and has the mount again on Saturday.
Last campaign Culminate ran creditable races behind Black Piranha and Melito in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap (sixth) and Winter Stakes (fourth) respectively.
The seven-year-old is a multiple Group winner in New Zealand including a victory in last year's Group One Otaki Maori (1600m).
Her most notable performance in Australia was her second to Typhoon Tracy in the 2009 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill.
Typhoon Tracy is likely to be a rival again in the Myer Classic after connections of the multiple Group One winner abandoned Cox Plate plans for the mare on Friday.
