Cortina Gal gave trainer David Payne plenty to cheer about on his first trip to Wyong where she scored a slashing all-the-way victory in the Magic Millions Two-year-old Slipper.

The win was an emotional one for the stable with the former South African horseman dedicating it to the late Bruce Reid whose name Cortina Gal's syndicate races under.

"Bruce got me started when I came to Australia just over five or so years ago and I wouldn't be in the position I am now without him," Payne said.

"I won my first stakes race with one of Bruce's horses, Miss Helterskelter in the Breeders Classic (2003) and his son David is a shareholder in this horse, so it's great that he's carried on his father's tradition."

Ridden by fellow South African turned Sydneysider Jeff Lloyd, Cortina Gal powered to the front from barrier five and opened up a comfortable lead on straightening and never looked troubled at any point.

The Gary Portelli-trained Koblenz finished strongly to get within a long neck of winner with Icedginger four lengths third in the 1000-metre race.

Payne expected the $200,000, Flying Spur filly to run a big race in Sunday's race and said his confidence was bolstered when he saw her opposition in the parade ring.

"I told Jeff that they all looked a bit fat and to just let her run," Payne said.

"This is my first trip to Wyong and it's been a very good one and I'm very proud of the horse.

"I'll give her a spell now and just take it easy with her."

Lloyd was equally impressed with the filly and said a decision by Payne to put blinkers on Cortina Gal was a good move.

"She wanted to stargaze in her last trial and the gear change worked a treat, she's a real speed machine this horse, she's got great natural speed and a great action," Lloyd said.

Payne said Cortina Gal would more than likely run in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January.

"We'll have a look at that I'd say, but I'll give her a week or two off now and see what how she goes before we commit her to that race," Payne said.
