Warrnambool trainers Bill and Symon Wilde expect they won't know until final acceptances next Tuesday whether Baughurst will line up in the Caulfield Cup, but a leading corporate bookmaker believes he will have a start stitched up by Saturday night.

Baughurst would gain an automatic Cup start if he wins Saturday's Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield but Symon Wilde accepts it is an unlikely scenario with Cox Plate favourite Whobegotyou and Underwood Stakes winner Heart Of Dreams in the field.

"He's drawn beautifully, it is a small field and he's going to get a nice run but we are not really expecting him to win," Wilde said.

Baughurst is equal 23rd in the order of the elimination for the Caulfield Cup which is limited to 18 runners with four emergencies.

Stablemate Hissing Sid is equal 28th but would exempt himself from the Caulfield Cup ballot if he can win Saturday's Group Two Herbert Power Stakes (2400m).

"We could end up with two in the Caulfield Cup or we could end up with none," Wilde said.

IASbet.com bookmaker Mark Read believes Baughurst, who is $13 in most markets, will win the Yalumba, likening him to last year's shock winner Douro Valley.

"A lot of his (Baughurst's) opposition still have the Cox Plate on their agenda and he represents great value sitting up front with absolutely no early pace, and the favourites back in the field," Read said.

Last Saturday Baughurst ran an outstanding race in the Turnbull Stakes when he raced close to the pace and held on to finish sixth, just 1-1/2 lengths from the winner Efficient.

It was Baughurst's best run this campaign and he has been competitive at weight-for-age in the past with a second to Theseo in the Group Two St George Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield last autumn and third in the 2007 Sandown Classic (2400m).

Wilde said a decision to back up Baughurst from the Turnbull was preferable to giving him a searching gallop on the Warrnambool track before the Caulfield Cup.

"With him it is a management issue as he is an eight-year-old and he has a lot of wear and tear," Symons said.

"Basically he lives at the beach during the week and instead of giving him a track gallop we thought it might be better to run him with the right weight and on a good surface at Caulfield.

"He is probably 50-50 to get in the Cup field without winning the Yalumba but we will see."
