Warrnambool trainer Bill Wilde is after a consolation win with Baughurst in Saturday's Group Three Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington after the horse was balloted out of Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.

The last-start Moonee Valley Cup runner-up was 25th in the Cup order of entry and missed a run in the 24-horse field.

A disappointing part of it was that there were two scratchings after final acceptances, Zarita and Yellowstone, while Baughurst was at home in his yard.

"There was a bit of hype about getting a Cup run but it wasn't devastating," said Wilde, a dentist who has been joined in a training partnership by his son Symon.

"I could have seen him running sixth or seventh in the Cup, but now he's in a race he has a chance of winning."

With regular rider Jamie Mott having weight problems, the Wilde team has engaged Michael Rodd for the seven-year-old who has drawn barrier nine in the 11-horse field for the 2500m feature.

"Michael is a good replacement. He's ridden him a few times and has won on him a couple of times," he said.

One of those wins was in last year's Werribee Cup (2000m).

After Saturday's race, Wilde has to make a decision on whether to back up the gelding in next Saturday's Group Two Sandown Classic (2400m) or wait a week for the Group Three Eclipse Stakes (2100m) at Sandown.

Baughurst ran third to Zipping in last year's Sandown Classic.

"I have a feeling the Sandown Classic is going to be a strong race this year, but we will still look at running him in it," Wilde said.

The Dermot Weld-trained Profound Beauty, fifth in the Melbourne Cup, and Zipping, an unlucky ninth, are likely Classic runners.

New Zealander Capecover, who was balloted out of the Cup after running third in the Saab Quality (2500m) at Flemington last Saturday, will run in the Queen Elizabeth (2500m) as will past winners Our Smoking Joe (2005) and Zavite (2007).

Our Smoking Joe ran a solid fourth to Theseo in the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) last Saturday.

Last-start Werribee Cup winner Mandela and Saab runner-up Light Vision add further depth to the race.
