Baughurst kept himself in the running for the Melbourne Cup with an impressive win in Saturday's Group Three David Jones Cup at Caulfield.

The seven-year-old gelding was dropping back in distance from 2520m to 2000m after finishing runner-up to Light Vision in The Bart Cummings at Flemington on October 4.

"He's still in the Melbourne Cup, but we might have to reassess where we go next with him. We were going to run him in the Moonee Valley Cup, but perhaps we could look at the Mackinnon," said Symon Wilde, son of the trainer.

Bill Wilde, who combines training with his profession as a dentist at Warrnambool, was not at Caulfield on Saturday as he was saddling up stablemate Key Symbol in the Avoca Cup, a non-tab venue.

Baughurst ($8.50) was heavyweight rider Jamie Mott's only mount at the meeting and he scored by 2-3/4 lengths from Pacino with Annenkov a half-head away third.

"He's had a bad back for his whole career," Symon Wilde said.

"It seems strange as a seven-year-old he's in the best form of his career."

Baughurst carried equal topweight of 57kg on Saturday, but he drops to 50.5kg in the Melbourne Cup for which he is 42nd in the order of entry into the 24-horse field.

The gelding has won nine races, including last year's Werribee Cup (2000m), and been placed on another 16 occasions from 33 starts and Saturday's win took his prizemoney to around $470,000.
