Emperor Bonaparte is due for a change of luck and jockey Jeff Lloyd believes if the gelding gets some in the Group Three Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday he will win.
The David Payne-trained three-year-old is running over 2000 metres for the first time.
Emperor Bonaparte comes into the race after rattling home to finish a half-neck second to Rhyno Chaser in the Listed Dulcify Quality (1800m) at Randwick on September 27.
He jumped awkwardly that day with Lloyd on board and gave the leaders a big start on straightening.
"That last run was enormous," Lloyd said.
"They had a good start on him and he sat out the back for most of it and only got going late, but when he did he was flying.
"He's been unlucky the last couple of starts but if he gets things his way tomorrow he's got the ability to win the race."
Two starts back Emperor Bonaparte was unlucky not to fall in the Gloaming Stakes after he clipped heels rounding the turn.
Lloyd's feet came out of the irons and he was forced to endure a bumpy ride in the straight with the horse finishing last.
"That was a painful day at the office and something I hope we don't see again," Lloyd said.
"It's just a matter of getting him to settle tomorrow and saving him up for one crack at them, that's the key with him, he's a very exciting horse and it's easy to see why David has such a high opinion of him."
Lloyd also rides stablemate Hurried Choice in the Group Two International Sprint (1100m).
The mare is coming off a 10th to El Cambio in the Gilgai Stakes down the straight at Flemington two weeks ago in her first run since winning the Group Two Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on September 13.
Dwayne Dunn had the ride in the Gilgai while Lloyd was on board for the win two starts back.
"Her last run was a bit disappointing but she's better on the turn and we're confident she'll run a nice race," Lloyd said.
Lloyd also steers Vecchia Roma for Payne in the Group Two Tristarc Stakes (1400m).
The Testa Rossa mare ran third to Neroli in the Listed Angst Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on October 4.
"What she lacks in ability she makes up for with heart and she'll be giving this race everything she has," Lloyd said.
