Victorian apprentice Brenton Avdulla began his two-month stint on loan to Gai Waterhouse in the best possible fashion when he booted Dance Idol to a commanding all-the-way win at Canterbury.

However, his joy was nearly cut short by stewards who called him in after the race for his celebratory salute just before the line in Wednesday's St Ignatius' College Riverview Handicap (1550m).

Chief steward Ray Murrihy let the 18-year-old newcomer off with a warning.

"We don't want to jump on your back on your first day here ... I don't know what you're used to in Melbourne but save that for after the post," Murrihy said.

Dance Idol ($2.10 fav) was slowly away but quickly mustered speed and set a good pace up front.

The filly opened up a good lead rounding the turn and kicked strongly on straightening to defeat Laurel Canyon ($9) by 2-1/2 lengths with Platamone Castle ($2.80) 3-1/4 lengths away third.

Avdulla, who has been riding since October 2007 and is indentured to Caulfield trainer John Moloney, was delighted to land a winner at his first ride for the premier trainer.

"It's a big thrill," Avdulla said.

"I've been here since Thursday night and wasn't meant ride until Saturday at Rosehill but Nash (Rawiller) couldn't ride this one because of the 54kg and I'm so happy I got the ride.

"It was only last Monday when I was on my way to Bairnsdale that my manager Mark Van Triet told me there was an offer to ride at Gai's stable with Nash Rawiller and Blake Shinn in Melbourne for the spring and with Daniel (Ganderton) out injured, I saw it as a good opportunity for me."

Waterhouse was pleased for the youngster.

"It's lovely for Brenton to kick off riding for the stable with a winner. He's a nice kid and a good little jockey," Waterhouse said.

Stablemate Merensky Reef gave Waterhouse an early double with his frontrunning win under Rawiller in the Me Bank Handicap (1900m).

Lagerphone had a touch of luck before going on to win the Chifley Financial Services Maiden (1100m).

The filly was troublesome behind the gates and barrier attendants failed to load her several times before Murrihy made a call to the starter to scratch her.

Fortunately for the filly's connections, the attendants were in the process of loading her when Murrihy called and by the time they received the message the filly was in the gates.

The John O'Shea-trained Lagerphone, who was ridden by Hugh Bowman, came from last at the turn to edge out Girls Go Racing in a thrilling finish.

Bowman was stood down from his riding commitments a race later by the STC club doctor with stewards saying the hoop was suffering from a headache.
