Talented apprentice Brenton Avdulla brought up a milestone at Randwick when he outrode his claim on Dances On Waves and made it a double celebration 40 minutes later with victory on Purrpurrlena.

The 19-year-old is keen to consolidate his position as Sydney's leading apprentice and said he was looking forward to matching it on equal terms with the senior jockeys.

Purrpurrlena's trainer Grahame Begg is one who thinks he has what it takes.

"He's got the strength and the nature to take the next step," Begg said.

"In fact I feel like we've been cheating with him over the past few months with him having a 1-1/2 kilo claim.

"He's an aggressive rider, a strong rider."

Avdulla had to use his mental strength and not his whip on Purrpurrlena in Saturday's Macau Jockey Club Handicap (1150m) where she beat Kanzan in a photo-finish.

"She hates being hit with the whip, it does her no good at all," Begg said.

The in-form Dances On Waves backed up her win of two weeks ago with victory in the Triple M Grill Team Handicap (1550m).

Trainer Gerald Ryan said it had been a toss-up whether she raced in that Benchmark 85 race or a Benchmark 80 later on the program.

"But in the end it didn't really matter, she would have won both of them," he said.

"And it's great that she was the horse for Brenton to outride his claim on."

Avdulla, who was able to use his claim for the whole program on Saturday, said he felt a sense of achievement.

"It's good to get that out of the way," he said.

"I'm looking forward to riding on level terms with the other jockeys and I hope the trainers continue to support me."

Avdulla is indentured to Anthony Cummings but it was Randwick neighbour Begg who gave him his biggest win so far when Secret Admirer won the Group One Flight Stakes.
