The decision's been made - champion mare Black Caviar will not take part in Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival. Trainer Peter Moody revealed on Monday that he's decided to rest the world's best sprinter. That means he's delaying a final decision on BC's future - to race or retire. That may come in September. Moody says: 'All the owners can sit down and have a good discussion about what to do with her...There are two options. If we retire her after that meeting in September she's still got plenty

If we retire her after that meeting in September she's still got plenty of time to go to stud. Otherwise we will give her a decent spell and bring her back for the autumn.'

She's back - and looking hot! Yes, mighty Mosheen turned in a slick barrier trial run at Cranbourne on Monday. She was only 3rd but she coasted, prompting trainer Robert Smerdon to say: 'She's done very well during the spell so I wanted to know just where she was at this stage of the preparation without bottoming her out...The object of the exercise was to benefit physically without putting her under too much pressure and that is exactly what we were able to do.' Regular jockey Danny Nikolic rode Mosheen in the 800m trial. He didn't knock her around and she was some 1.5 lengths from the winner Ravenous Lass on the post. Danny told Smerdon that Mosheen got the right gallop and was never out of her comfort zone. She'll trial again in 2 weeks time.

Keen as mustard Michelle Payne had 3 rides at the Cranbourne trials. She's making good progress on her comeback from serious injuries sustained in a race fall in May. One of her mounts was the smart Grp 1 winner Yosei, who was 4 lengths behind Mosheen in the trial. Michelle says: 'Being unable to ride did give me the chance to work on areas that I felt I could improve on. I've focused a lot on my technique at the end of races during this break, I want to be able to bring my horses into the race a bit earlier and I think that will make me a much better rider.' When will she be back race riding? Probably August 12 - ironically at Donald, the track where was injured!
