Exciting sprinter Black Caviar makes her much-anticipated return from an injury-enforced layoff in Saturday's Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield.
Unbeaten in five starts, she hasn't raced since landing her second Group Two success in the Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on January 22.
Black Caviar suffered a suspensory injury which forced her to the paddock but she has had a good grounding and has pleased trainer Peter Moody in her build-up to the Schillaci (1000m).
"She's done super, I'm very happy with her," Moody said.
"She's big (in condition) and has good improvement in her but she's going terrific and she'll need to be with the opposition that's around in the sprinting ranks.
"She's up against the likes of Mic Mac, Star Witness and First Command so it's not going to be any easy task but she's there to run well."
Moody said he was open-minded about what races the daughter of Bel Esprit would run in later this spring but Saturday's Group Two weight-for-age feature would guide him as to where to take her.
Black Caviar spent some time during the winter on the water-walker at Peter Clarke's Willow Wood Equicentre at Murchison in central Victoria before returning to Moody's stables in late July.
Moody said he had maintained a strict diet and regimen with her so that she didn't get too heavy during her time away from the track.
She showed she was on her way back with an easy 800m barrier trial win at Cranbourne, running 47.75 seconds, on September 20.
Four of her five wins have been at stakes level, including the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington last September when she pulled a shoulder muscle which forced her out of the rest of the spring carnival.
Star Witness has been kept fresh since his first-up third to Toorak Toff in the Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 14.
Trainer Danny O'Brien intends to run the 2009 Group One Blue Diamond Stakes winner in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day after the Schillaci.
The Starcraft colt will be ridden for the first time by O'Brien's new stable jockey James Winks, replacing Nick Hall who has ridden him in his five starts for three wins.
"He's going well and looks amazing at the track," Winks said.
Black Caviar is $1.75 favourite with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Star Witness ($5.50), First Command ($6.50) with Mic Mac at $8 and Winter King next best at $15.
