Unbeaten mare Black Caviar has set up a mouth-watering showdown with sprint sensation Hay List after winning the Group Two Schillaci Stakes in near-record time at Caulfield.

The four-year-old was on the comeback trail from injury on Saturday but could not have been more impressive with her blistering pace which saw her triumph by 1-1/4 lengths over Winter King with General Truce another 2-1/4 lengths away third.

She ran 56.68 seconds for the 1000m but could have seriously threatened Lucky Secret's 55.97s course record had Luke Nolen not eased her down over the last 50 metres.

Nolen said Black Caviar was still fat and would improve a lot for her next start which most likely will be a clash with Manikato Stakes winner Hay List in the Group Two Schweppes Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day.

Black Caviar has won all of her six starts while five-year-old Hay List, the winner of 12 of his 14 starts, is unbeaten in three runs this spring including last month's Manikato at the Valley and last Sunday's Group Two Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Peter Moody admitted to feeling the pressure of training Black Caviar with the expectation about her winning growing with every run.

The daughter of Bel Esprit had a weak chest as a young horse but was able to race twice as a two-year-old while her three-year-old season was cut short when she suffered a suspensory injury.

"She always had that soft muscle issue in her chest as a young horse and obviously she pulled a little bone away when she had a mild strain on her suspensory," Moody said.

"She's been going super at home but it is always sort of heart-in-mouth stuff.

"It is just lovely to see her back but the biggest thrill I will get is in the morning when she walks out of the box in one piece."

Moody said a showdown with Hay List was looming and while a treat for racegoers it was something he was cool about.

"I don't know if you look forward to taking on a horse like Hay List," Moody said.

"He looks outstanding but it is inevitable it will probably happen sometime in the spring and I have never been one to run and hide."

Nolen said Black Caviar was as exciting as ever.

"She's got a pretty economical action and the quicker she goes the better she feels," Nolen said.

"She wasn't here to have a gut-buster, we were here to win and ... get her through the run safely.

"Actually she felt a bit bigger today and feels a bit fatter also, so I think she's going to improve a hell of a lot."
