WITH a heavy heart Katelyn and Andrew Mallyon headed today to Sandown after the funeral of their grandmother, Diane Mallyon. Katelyn and Andrew would have put a smile on the face of their 'Pop' - three time winning Caulfield Cup jockey Mick Mallyon as they finished one-two in the Sportingbet Handicap. "It is what 'Nan' would have wanted," Katelyn said after she partnered Bonnie Nuit to a short head win over Andrew's mount Capitivating Lady.

Peter Mertens added another chapter to his remarkable association with Geegees Blackflash, winner of Wed's Launceston Cup. Mertens now boasts a Launceston and Hobart Cup among the eight races he's won on the John Luttrell-trained six-year-old. It was a case of third time lucky in the Launceston Cup for Geegees Blackflash, which ran third in 2011 behind Fast Future and second, beaten a head, last year behind Prevailing. Hobart Cup winner Hurdy Gurdy Man, the short-priced favourite for the Grp 3 race, went amiss with Glen Boss easing him out of the race between the 1000 and 800 metre mark.

Jockey Ben Melham reckons Lonhspresso is good enough to graduate to Stakes class following her effortless win in the Land Engineering Handicap at Sandown Park on Wednesday. Melham says the daughter of Lonhro possesses all the attributes of a filly who can quickly improve to black type status.
