Gerald Mosse appears the main beneficiary of Douglas Whyte's and Brett Prebble's absence from Happy Valley today and has picked up a number of great rides for leading trainer Caspar Fownes to bolster his Jockey Challenge claims. Mosse last night opened a $2.60 favourite, ahead of last Sunday's surprise winner, apprentice Keith Yeung Ming-lun, who has a full book of 10 rides and is a $3.40 second elect.

With Whyte riding in Japan and Prebble out on suspension, Zac Purton ($10), Matthew Chadwick ($13) and Darren Beadman ($20) look the main value chances at longer odds, but each would need to have a good day at the office to match Mosse and his nine mounts.

The Frenchman starts his afternoon with Towkay Flyer, Golden Boy and Wait For Me for local trainers Michael Chang Chun-wai and Dennis Yip Chor-hong, although his best chance early in the card comes in race four for Fownes.

Private Road has raced in great form for Fownes since switching yards at the end of last season and, from barrier two in a moderate event, the gelding should prove too classy with 118 pounds.

Mosse will sit out race five, but it will be all action late in the day with Record High for Me Tsui Yu-sak, before El Morro, Hold Hands, Perfect Sprint and Mark Up for Fownes.

The Fownes-Mosse partnership has proven a potent force in the past, with Mosse's last 100 rides for Fownes resulting in 10 winners, although that statistic reaches back to the 2007-08 season.
